Essay Questions.

In the United States nearly 40,000 people die annually as a result of being shot by a firearm. Another 73,000 people experience firearm injuries — some so severe they are life altering. There is no question that deaths and injuries from firearms — what we will call gun violence — comprise a serious and important problem in this country. It is also evident that the United States has long resisted solutions to its gun violence epidemic.

  1. A few documented individual risk factors for gun violence are impulse control, access to guns and callousness since these are commonly associated with serious forms of delinquent offending. Many adolescents may come from underserved communities and have experiences with various forms of abuse and neglect. Some of their family members and friends may already have firearms, resulting in easier access. In 200 words or more, explain if you believe that easier access can increase or decrease the strength of the connection between impulsive control, callousness, and using a firearm against another person?

  2. Have you known someone or know of a specific incident where gun violence was used to kill or seriously hurt a person,? and if so, how has that affected you? (150 words or more)
